Geocaching 101
Geocaching in Rio Rancho
Did you know that there are numerous geocaches in Rio Rancho? They are on our fields, trails, and in our parks! Geocaching is a fun activity that can be shared with the whole family! Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find a geocache (container) hidden at that location.

What is it? How do I join in?
Join in and learn how to unravel the mystery of how a GPS unit works and the treasures you can find once you understand it. We’ll spend a short time going over rules, GPS devices, caches, treasures, and more before discovering geocaches hidden throughout the park. We’ll cover the basics of geocaching, including what it is, how to do it, tricks of the trade and more. Bring your own GPS unit or download a GPS application to your smart-phone. We will provide a few for demonstration purposes or for you to borrow if you don’t have one.
You can log onto the
Geocaching web site to learn more about geocaching prior to the course.
